Phase Out of Live Sheep Exports by Sea - Development of a Sheep Industry Strategy and Implementation Plan

Overview

The Australian Government is providing assistance for sheep producers and associated supply chain entities that have been affected by the cessation of live sheep exports by sea from 1 May 2028. This program will design and establish a sheep industry strategy for Western Australia and nationally, to provide for the stability and long-term viability of the industry following the transition out of live sheep exports by sea from 1 May 2028. The strategy will address the following points: • A clear industry-led, government supported strategy that promotes direction, confidence and growth in the sheep and wool industry in Western Australia. • A prioritised investment plan for implementing key priorities to support industry activities that give effect to the long-term strategy including possible further research and development investment. The objective of the program is: • To facilitate development of a strategy, underpinned by robust economic analysis, for the sheep industry in Western Australia and nationally, in light of the phase out of live exports of sheep by sea from 1 May 2028. The intended outcomes of the program are: • A strategy, underpinned by robust economic analysis, for the sheep industry in Western Australia and nationally, in light of the phase out of live exports of sheep by sea from 1 May 2028.  • To increase confidence and long-term direction for the Western Australian sheep meat and wool industry following the transition away from live sheep exports by sea. • Sheep producers participate in the development of and support for implementation of an industry led strategy that promotes direction, confidence and growth in Western Australia as part of an integrated national sheep supply chain.
