Overview

The Exploring World Heritage Nomination for the West Kimberley (the program) grant will run across the 2024-25 and 2025-26 financial years. The program is part of the DCCEEW Program 2.2 – Protecting Australia’s cultural, historic and First Nations Heritage. The objective of the program is to provide funding to the Kimberley Land Council to conduct consultations with Traditional Owner groups on a potential Tentative List submission for West Kimberley. A Tentative List submission is the first step towards a World Heritage listing. The intended outcome of the program is that the Kimberley Land Council will establish which Traditional Owner groups are interested in pursuing a World Heritage process and will consider providing their Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) to pursuing a Tentative List submission. Provided FPIC is obtained by a sufficient number of Traditional Owner groups, for areas that are likely to have Outstanding Universal Value, the Tentative List submission can be progressed.
