Overview

The National Trauma Research Institute (NTRI), in conjunction with Australian Trauma Quality Improvement Program (AusTQIP), established the Australia New Zealand Trauma Registry (ATR) in 2012. It brings together Australia’s 26 designated major trauma centres in all states and territories to provide important data on the most severely injured patients. The ATR is jointly funded with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications and Department of Health to allow it to accurately track the progress of major injuries through the major trauma centres in Australia.  The ATR is a clinical quality registry that collects and monitors data, which is used to improve the quality of trauma care for patients within Australia. It plays a vital role in collecting National trauma data including how patients were injured, the nature of the injuries sustained, the patient’s treatment received and outcomes achieved. This information helps facilitate injury reduction strategies and identify improvements for trauma services, which in turn lead to reduced hospital waiting times and a reduction in hospital stays. The objectives of the Australia New Zealand Trauma Registry Grant Opportunity (the grant opportunity) are to build the capacity of the ATR to collect and analyse information about trauma patients, injury management and their injury outcomes informing future improvements to health service provision and development, with the long-term societal aim of reducing preventable deaths and permanent disability because of injuries.
