Overview

The purpose of the grant is to support the development and implementation of accreditation standards to support the implementation of an Area of Practice endorsement for cosmetic surgery by the Medical Board of Australia (Board). It contributes to the achievement of the objectives set by Health Ministers at the 2 September 2022 Health Ministers Meeting. Implementation of an Area of practice endorsement in cosmetic surgery will ensure Australians seeking cosmetic surgery have access to safe and competent professionals. The objectives of the grant are to: provide funding for additional resources to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) to enable it to contract the Australian Medical Council (AMC) to develop accreditation standards for complex cosmetic surgery; and establish a system for the assessment and accreditation of existing courses that lead to qualification in cosmetic surgery. The intended outcomes of the grant are: Establishment of a robust and rigorous framework for the qualification and skills recognition of medical practitioners who have not completed significant specialist training; and A clear means for members of the public to determine whether a non-surgeon medical practitioner has completed adequate training to provide safe and quality cosmetic surgical services.
