Overview

The Dead or Deadly program is funded under the Indigenous Australians’ Health Programme, which was established by the Australian Government on 1 July 2014. Dead or Deadly is targeted towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in southern NSW with, or at high risk of developing, chronic disease. The Dead or Deadly program provides a holistic preventive approach to tackling chronic disease. There are four components: physical activity and exercise; nutrition; smoking cessation; and chronic disease prevention and management. The program also takes a social determinants and cultural determinants approach to health, identifying health risk behaviours, psychological distress, and barriers to self-confidence. The objectives of the Dead or Deadly program are to: support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women in management and prevention of chronic disease and social and emotional wellbeing; and empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and their families to participate in their own health outcomes by access to education, information, and preventative health care strategies.
