Overview

On 11 February 2018, the Australian Government announced funding of $183.73 million to extend the Tackling Indigenous Smoking (TIS) program from 2018-19 to 2021-22. The objective of the TIS program is to reduce smoking rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by preventing uptake of smoking and promoting smoking cessation. Reductions in smoking prevalence will reduce rates of chronic disease and continue to improve life expectancy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.   The objectives of the grant opportunity are to:• ensure evidence-based population health approaches targeting tobacco use by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are delivered in more remote areas; and• reduce Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander smoking rates in more remote areas of Australia.  The intended outcomes of the grant opportunity are to, in more remote areas of Australia: • implement evidence-based health promotion activities aimed at preventing uptake of smoking, promoting smoking cessation, and reducing exposure to second-hand smoke;• engage community/ies and community leaders in the development of activities;• promote partnerships and collaborations to support tobacco control initiatives;• increase access to Quit support through capacity building; and• focus on important priority groups, such as pregnant women and other priority groups as identified through local consultation.
