Overview

The National Cord Blood Collection Network (the Network) was established in 2001 and funds the collection, banking, storing, searching and supply of cord blood units (CBU) for the purpose of transplantation into Australian patients requiring Haemopoietic Progenitor Cell (HPC) therapy. The Network is also part of a worldwide donor pool which has access to a global inventory of cord blood units. The Program’s aims are to maintain a high quality, coordinated, collaborative, cost-effective network for the collection, storage and supply of CBUs for Australian patients requiring HPC transplantation. The objective of the Program is to support eligible Australians with access to potentially lifesaving HPC therapy through:• maintaining a National Cord Blood Registry to provide suitable, matched unrelated cord blood to patients requiring HPC transplantation through collection and storage and release of CBUs;• facilitating international access to CBUs to meet Australia’s needs; and• collecting and reporting the details of HPC transplants. The cost of the program for all Australian governments is up to $18.9 million over two years: 2016-17 and 2017-18.
