National Roadmap for Skin Cancer Screening

Overview

This grant opportunity will support the development of a roadmap for a national targeted skin cancer screening program, in line with priorities of the Australian Cancer Plan.  Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, making it the most common cancer nationally. Of those diagnosed with skin cancer, approximately 1-2% (or 18,257 people in 2023) will be diagnosed with invasive melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer.  Early detection is critical for reducing the overall burden of melanoma, with survival strongly linked to early diagnosis. However, access to timely, effective, and affordable skin checks to detect skin cancer is limited. While there is currently insufficient evidence to support population-wide screening for skin cancer, there is emerging evidence to support targeted screening of people at high risk.  To view the grant opportunity documents, please select the red "Grant Opportunity Documents" button on the left-hand side.
