Overview

The Psychiatry Workforce Program 2022-2026 (the Program) is one of a suite of measures funded by the Commonwealth under the 2021-22 Budget Mental Health Workforce packages to attract, upskill, distribute and retain key mental health professionals to address mental health workforce shortages and maldistribution.  The Psychiatry Workforce Program 2023-26 will extend three of the four activities funded under the current Program (2021-2023) including: a salary contribution for new psychiatry training posts and supervisor positions supporting the development of a rural and remote psychiatry training pathway and network recruiting medical graduates into psychiatry training through early engagement of medical student. The 2023-26 Program continues to build on existing objectives including:  increase the psychiatrist workforce and therefore consumer access to psychiatric care by increasing the number of training places, including in rural and remote areas across Australia increase the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander psychiatry trainees; and promote psychiatry to medical graduates through early engagement of medical students.   The intended outcomes of the Program also remain consistent with current Program 2021-23 outcomes including:  access to psychiatric care is increased, especially in rural and remote locations across Australia more medical graduates choosing psychiatry as a career Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students and graduates are supported to enter psychiatry training; and promote the Diploma of Psychiatry (developed under the current Program during 2021-2023) to medical practitioners.
