Overview

As part of the 2020-21 Budget, the Australian Government has committed funding of up to $4.55 million over one financial year (2020-21) for the establishment of the Suicide Prevention and Peer-Support for Young People Program. This Grant Opportunity relates to $1.45 million under the Program. Funding under this Program aims to increase young people’s (aged 12 to 25 years) access to appropriate and suitable advice and assistance from trusted peers and other members of their communities who have real world experience of the issues they are facing. This Program will support some of the most vulnerable groups, including young Australians, particularly in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and those at risk of suicide. In line with the objectives of the Program, the objectives of the Suicide Prevention and Peer-Support for Young People Program are to:• promote the mental health and well-being of young Australians;• reduce the impact of mental health problems and mental illness in young Australians; and• promote recovery from mental health problems and mental illness. The intended outcomes of the Suicide Prevention and Peer-Support for Young People Program are:• a reduction in prevalence of mental illness and suicidal ideation in young Australians;• early intervention and detection of mental illness in young Australians; and• improved access to effective and appropriate community support, enabling young Australians with a mental illness to access appropriate treatment and overcome their illness, and  to participate fully in the community.
