Overview

This grant opportunity will contribute to implementation of the National Women’s Health Strategy 2020-2030 (the Strategy) which outlines a national approach to improving health outcomes for all women and girls, particularly those at greatest risk of poor health.  The 2022-23 Budget allocated funds to support community-led approaches for the prevention of female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) to tackle the health impacts of violence against women (as per page 114 of the 2022?23 Budget Paper No 2).  In addition to contributing to the implementation of the Strategy, this grant opportunity will address Recommendations 34 and 49 of the House of Representatives’ Inquiry into Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence (House of Representatives inquiry).  The purpose of this grant opportunity is to raise awareness of, and address the health impacts (including physical and mental manifestations) of FGM/C in culturally and linguistically diverse, and migrant and refugee communities. The Strategy recognises the significant and long-term physical and emotional implications for the health of victim survivors of violence. The objectives of the grant opportunity are to: increase understanding of FGM/C and its consequences, through community-led initiatives; improve support for women and girls affected by, or at risk of, FGM/C; and assist communities to move towards the abandonment of the practice. The intended outcomes of the grant opportunity are: a demonstrated increase in community understanding of FGM/C, its health risks, impacts and consequences; and a measurable contribution to the implementation of Recommendations 34 and 49 of the House of Representatives Inquiry.
