Overview

The World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) is an international treaty negotiated under the auspices of WHO. The WHO FCTC Secretariat works with institutions that can assist Parties (countries who are signatories to the WHO FCTC) in a number of technical areas of the treaty. The WHO designates these entities as Knowledge Hubs and their role is to assist the WHO FCTC Secretariat in fulfilling the mandates given to it by the Parties to the WHO FCTC. The WHO FCTC Secretariat has established seven Knowledge Hubs with one in each of the six WHO regions. Knowledge Hubs assist in the implementation of Article 22 of the treaty (Cooperation in the scientific, technical, and legal fields and provision of related expertise) by analysing, synthesising, and disseminating information in their areas of expertise in relation to the treaty. The Western Pacific Region WHO FCTC Knowledge Hub, McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, is based at the Cancer Council Victoria and assists Parties to the WHO FCTC in regards to legal challenges to WHO FCTC implementation. This grant opportunity is to fund the designated WHO FCTC Knowledge Hub on Legal Challenges based in Australia. The objectives of the grant opportunity are to: - support the core activities of the WHO FCTC Knowledge Hubs as mandated by the WHO;- contribute to and support Australia’s international obligations under the WHO FCTC;- reduce the harm caused by tobacco use globally by supporting Parties to the WHO FCTC to strengthen their implementation of the WHO FCTC; and- analyse, synthesise and disseminate to the Parties to the WHO FCTC knowledge hub and information on matters relating to tobacco legal challenges in relation to the WHO FCTC.
