Overview

Healthdirect Australia (Healthdirect) is funded by all Australian Governments to provide all people in Australia with accessible, person-centred and clinically reviewed health information and advice accessed via phone, video call, social media and other online resources and tools. These services include a 24/7 nurse helpline, an after-hours GP helpline and a suite of resources enabling access to reliable, evidence-based health advice and information. By leveraging innovative technology solutions, Healthdirect’s services aim to enhance access to qualified health practitioners, reduce pressure on the broader healthcare system and support equitable delivery of health services across Australia. The recently announced 1800MEDICARE investment by the Australian Government seeks to leverage and expand Healthdirect’s digital communication infrastructure to establish a free, nationwide 1800MEDICARE helpline and associated digital suite of tools. 1800MEDICARE will provide access to 24/7 health advice, after-hours GP virtual health services, and referrals to appropriate services under a nationally consistent model.  The objectives of the 1800MEDICARE program are to provide Australians with accessible, person-centred and clinically reviewed health information and advice accessed via phone, video call, social media and other online resources and tools. 1800MEDICARE seeks to provide a nationally consistent service under the recognised and trusted Medicare brand.
