Joint Global Programme
Department of Health, Disability and Ageing
Overview
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Joint Global Programme (JGP) assists developing countries to improve access to and availability of internationally controlled drugs required for medical treatment, with a particular focus on providing access to essential pain medication, while simultaneously controlling diversion. The JGP is implemented by the UNODC with cooperation from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). Previous Australian funding has supported implementation of the JGP in Timor-Leste, Fiji and Indonesia. Through this program, the UNODC works closely with international organisations and national governments to form a deeper understanding of existing gaps and challenges facing each country, and to develop a way forward and plan of action. The UNODC has also been developing and rolling out training materials to build capacity of healthcare workers and supporting the development of national palliative care plans.
