Ingham's Sorell poultry facility in Tasmania – Inghams Enterprises Pty. Limited

Overview

The purpose of the grant is to support Inghams Enterprises Pty. Limited (Inghams) operations at the Sorell poultry facility in Tasmania to implement a new system for wastewater treatment and discharge. This will reduce the risk of wastewater contamination of the Pitt Water Orielton Lagoon (Lagoon). The grant forms part of the Australian Government’s Supporting Australian Industry package, which provides $135.5 million over four years to boost local industry. It also contributes to achieving Outcome 1 of the department’s Portfolio Budget Statement: Support economic growth, productivity and job creation for all Australians by investing in science, technology and commercialisation, growing innovative and competitive businesses, industries and regions, and supporting resources. The objectives of the grant are to: install a new wastewater treatment plant at the Sorell poultry facility reduce contaminated water, as per EPA Tasmania standards, going into the Pitt Water Orielton Lagoon and surrounding areas increase capacity at the facility. The intended outcomes of the grant are to: reduce the risk of contamination to the Pitt Water Orielton Lagoon and surrounding areas reduce disposal of contaminated wastewater to land adjacent to the Sorell plant ensure treated water complies with the EPA permit levels for the Ingham Sorell poultry processing facility including the level of total phosphorous and total nitrogen  expand the poultry processing capacity  establish a pipeline to discharge waste concentrate to TasWater’s Sorell plant support and grow the local economy by sustaining operations to ensure long-term employment for the facilities workforce and provide new opportunities for local workers.
