Overview

The purpose of the grant is to provide grant funding for a feasibility study in order to help secure Norske Skog’s long-term future in Tasmania as Australia’s only producer of publication grade paper. The grant forms part of the Australian Government’s Supporting Australian Industry package, which provides $135.5 million over four years to boost local industry. The objectives of the grant are to undertake an analysis of options for the replacement of the coal-fired boiler at the Norske Skog Boyer mill, including detailed engineering studies for potential technological solutions and alternative fuel sources; and to produce a Final Investment Decision (FID) report on the replacement of the Norske Skog Boyer mill’s aging coal fired thermal energy generation boiler. The intended outcomes of the grant are to support and grow the local economy and secure stable employment for the mill’s workforce through improving the long-term financial sustainability of the Norske Skog Boyer mill; to present an investment ready business case for a new boiler system with potential to reduce the mills annual CO2 emissions, secure thermal energy supply and increase energy efficiency; and to support sovereign manufacturing capability and supply chain resilience for newsprint and publication grade paper.
