This grant opportunity was announced as part of the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) 2024–25 (p.262) statement. Funding is to be provided in 2025–26 for the Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) which supports young First Nations people to train and participate in marathon events. The grant opportunity will support primary prevention activities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and adults by encouraging healthy lifestyles through education and physical activity, as part of sporting programs. The IMF also contributes to physical activity targets set out in the Australian Government’s National Preventive Health Strategy 2021 to 2031 (inclusive of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan 2021–2031), through improved health and wellbeing of First Nations people through increased involvement in sport. The objectives of the grant opportunity are: develop future health leaders to advocate, champion and deliver health promotion and preventative health activities and services support and encourage Indigenous men, women, and children to become more physically active, improve their food choices, adopt a healthy lifestyle, and reduce their risk of chronic disease. The intended outcomes of the grant opportunity are: the delivery of a specific Indigenous health promotion and leadership program that recruits, develops and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to train for and run marathons, including undertaking educational and leadership training.
