Overview

The School Student Broadband Initiative is an election commitment to provide free NBN broadband services for up to 30,000 eligible families with school age children (K-12). The School Student Broadband Initiative - Round 2 is an extension to the School Student Broadband Initiative and will run until 31 March 2026. The program was extended as part of the 2023-24 Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) and will allow free services to families to continue until 31 December 2025. The objectives of the program are: to boost education opportunities for school children with no internet at home and to narrow the digital divide to support a National Referral Centre making it easier for families to access the initiative. The program contributes to achieving Outcome 5 of the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, which is to promote an innovative and competitive communications sector, through policy development, advice and program delivery, so all Australians can realise the full potential of digital technologies and communications services.
